Field Combat  Jaleco (Tose)1985Very average military-style shooter. Graphics feel dated even for a 1985 game, as does the sound. Playable to a certain degree but with a total lack of outstanding elements. labelimageminimize
Ikari Warriors  SNK;K Amusement Leasing (Micronics)1986You and a friend are warriors with secret orders to invade an enemy nation. Working together as a team, you must fight for survival against a relentless onslaught of enemies!***
[1]***
[52]***Ikari Warriors is a run and gun arcade game port and very similar to Commando. It is longer and more diverse than [game=#7674]Commando[/game]. You can even use tanks and helicopters which make the game a bit easier. Speaking of difficulty... the game is really hard. That is not only because you are constantly attacked and several grenade throwing enemies are extremely unfair, but also because of the bad controls. The first two levels have a jungle theme and the last two levels you are in a kind of enemy base. The levels are rather long and boringly designed and nearly impossible to complete if you don't have a cheat method at hand. I prefer Commando over this.***1 player or 2 players simultaneous cooperative.

King Kong 2: Ikari no Megaton Punch  Konami1986This game is based on the 1986 movie "King Kong Lives", which was also known as "King Kong 2" in Japan. Your goal is to rescue a lovely giant pink female gorilla at the end of nine levels. First you have to find eight keys throughout the levels, each guarded by a boss monster. The game plays similar to the overworld of [game=#9176]The Legend of Zelda[/game] or [game=#156357]Nazo no Murasame-Joe[/game], but lacks any RPG or adventure elements. Throughout the levels you can destroy many ground objects in the hopes to find extra items or hidden doors. I doubt however that the game's content has much to do with the movie. So many strange surroundings Kong has do wander through with even stranger enemies. "King Kong 2" is one of the first 2Mbit cartridge games and Konami did a good job with the graphics and music once again. The game also plays well enough.***The subtitle means 'Megaton Punch of Anger'.

Spy Hunter Sunsoft1987Spy Hunter... considered armed and extremely dangerous. You control the turbo charged race car/hydro spy boat. You control a deadly arsenal of missiles, machine guns, oil slicks and smoke screens. Multiple nerve-shattering spy-action screens. Sophisticated spy-challenging graphics. This is hardly a game. It's a high-speed test of your secret agent skills. Meet the challenge and survive SPY HUNTER!***Spy Hunter might be a real classic in the arcades, but the NES version doesn't appeal to me. It's fast, yes, but thats all good I can say about it. The graphics are not very pretty and the gameplay is not very varied. An endless street (or waterway), avoiding other vehicles or shoot them down. And on and on it goes without change. There are no levels and no end goal besides accumulating a high score. That might have worked for an 1983 arcade game, which drew its main attention from its steering wheel controls, but it does not for a 1987 NES game in my opinion. I turned my NES off with a big yawn after two tries. labelimagesubject
Breakthru  Data East1987The NES version of Breakthru is a good deal better than the extremely unplayable homecomputer versions, but still not an enjoyable game. Hop and shoot your way through boring enemy and level layouts.***Two players alternating with no interactions (alternating single player). There is driving but no racing in this game.

This is a side-scrolling vehicle shooter. You vehicle can maneuver in narrow space and jump on the mountains, bridge, plains, city, and airfield levels.

Top Gun  Konami;Hyundai (Konami)1987***You're a High Flying Fighter Jock. The Hottest Pilot in the Heat of a Battle. The sun shimmers on the horizon as your armed-to-the-teeth Navy fighter screams from the carrier deck, accelerating into the danger zone. High above hostile waters your mission is to defend the task force from enemy attack. Suddenly, bogeys flash onto your radar. They're everywhere, diving toward you at Mach 2. Only a second to react, you go to guns and arm missiles. Your heart pounds and palms sweat as you blast into the dogfight with cannons blazing. Tracers zip past your engines. Shells shatter your senses. Now it's just you against them. And to survive you'll need more than speed and firepower. You'll need guts and instinct. You'll need to be a "TOP GUN" pilot.***

[52]***Top Gun is pretty much an Afterburner clone despite the little change from third-person to first-person perspective and in no way a serious flight simulation. I am generally not a fan of this type of shooting game. Added to the flight action there are notoriously difficult landing sequences and tanking in mid-air sequences which have to be managed if you don't want to lose a life. For a game based on a movie its not too bad I guess, at least it was a bit better than Ocean's computer versions. But that doesn't catapult it into regions above being only an average game.***

Rambo  Acclaim Entertainment;Pack-in-Video (Pack-in-Video)1987Freedom is everything.

You are Rambo. Fallen hero. Once a decorated green beret; special weapons expert; master of the martial arts. Now, you're living in solitary, a prisoner of the government you swore to defend.

Intelligence sources believe they have discovered a hidden POW camp deep in the jungle. Your brothers in arms have been enslaved there for years. It's your choice: accept a suicide mission to find the camp, or spend the rest of your life in a 6' by 8' cell.

Your body is a weapon. Your mind, a disciplined machine. The most advanced military hardware is at your disposal, and a chopper waits to carry you to the drop site, where once again, you will be alone deep in hostile territory.

This is your war, Rambo. A war that will test your every skill. A war with only two possible results: freedom or death.

Armed and alone, you parachute into enemy territory.
Match courage and wits with the animals that rule the jungle.
Race to the landing site. It may be your only way to escape.
Weave your way through the enemy weapons warehouse.***
[33]***This game gets lots of hate from players, but I think this one is actually pretty average. There are some elements that I don't like. Most of the fights, especially at the beginning is against wildlife, the whole side-scrolling knive-stabbing action is not as typical Rambo-like as other more standard Run and Gun style top-down shooters of other Rambo versions in the 80s. While not a better game per se, the C64 Rambo game from Ocean just fit the Rambo style much better. The character also looks a bit goofy and is not really well animated. On the plus side must be noted that they tried to tell a story. When I compare this to other NES games released in or before 1987 this one does pretty well in the story section and its not your typical fantasy scenario that often came with such kind of Action-Adventure titles.***This game is based on them movie Rambo: First Blood Part II.

This is a Zelda II clone. In Japan, Zelda II for the Famicom Disk System was released about 11 months before the Famicom version of Rambo. The Famicom version of Rambo has a level layout very similar to Zelda II. The USA version reduces the similarity be rearranging the levels a bit.

Paris-Dakar Rally Special!  Sony (ISCO)1988"Paris-Dakar Rally Special!" is the strangest interpretation of a Paris-Dakar rally game I have ever encountered. From the title you might expect an ordinary racing game, but you can't be possible more wrong. The game consists of several stages, each with vastly different gameplay. First of all the game starts in Tokyo in an adventure mode. You have to walk around the city and must get a car, money and a sponsor for the race. After that you switch between top-down racing stages and side-view stages. The top-down view stages are also very different from each other. One level features a maze-like design with narrow streets in another one you have to evade desert creatures and the most astonishing one has you to avoid and shoot hostile tanks and jetfighters! And yes you are able to shoot in some of the stages. The side-view stages are reflex-tests. You are driving your car, again shooting creatures and avoiding stuff like falling eggs from birds or huge boulders rolling down the street. From time to time your characters must leave the car and jump over some pits to activate levers in order to being able to progress with the car again. One level even takes place underwater... yes driving in your car. All this sounds pretty insane and thats exactly what it is. An insane mix of gameplay elements. Nothing plays particularly well and the game is by no means a good one. But at least it did surprise me in a funny way I must admit. labelimageminimize
Knight Rider  Pack-In-Video;Acclaim Entertainment (Pack-In-Video)1988KITT is more than a car, it's an extension of you, Michael Knight! You'll race day and night through sizzling deserts, icy mountains, big city freeways and more! It's up to you and KITT to bring these thieves to justice! Go get 'em Michael Knight. Get every last one!***Although this game is based on a North American TV series, it was first published in Japan 1988-09 and then Korea shortly after. It did not reach the USA until 15 months later. Other North American TV series based games, such as the Sesame street series and Gilligan's Island, were not even published outside of North America. Airwolf, another North American TV series that enjoyed international success, was also published first in Japan.

The UPC code is said to be 0-21481-10302-8 by some sources. But 3-61622-01111-0 is used most often. As Acclaim prints its barcodes on the side of its packages, it is not often seen in online scans of their game boxes. Both codes may be valid, but I have not visually confirmed either of them. Also, I could not locate the Korean and European product barcodes; one of the above codes may be from a European version.

Jackal Konami;Playtronic (Konami)1988***Pretty straightforward and well playable shooter game similar to overhead "run and gun" games, just that you are driving a jeep instead of running around on foot.***Infrared satellites soaring miles above Earth have spotted dozens of American prisoners of war still trapped on enemy soil. Missing for years but never forgotten, these men must be brought home. But America is in no position to risk an all-out invasion that could prompt retaliation. Instead, the only possible hope for their freedom is a small scale commando raid - code name JACKAL.***The catalog number for the brazilian version published by Playtronic, NES-JK-BZL, is not visually confirmed.***1 player or 2 players simultaneous.

Guerilla War  SNK19881 player or 2 players simultaneous cooperative play.

A Contra style game staring Fidel Castro and Che Guevara fight side-by-side to topple the Batista dictatorship in Cuba, 1950. No, I'm not kidding. Of course only the Japanese version is so revolutionary. The versions published elsewhere changed the names to protect the revolutionaries. True story by-the-way. In the real invasion a mere 82 men crammed into one passenger boat invaded Cuba, facing an army and air force. 17 survived the initial battle including Castro's brother. Several of their men were discovered to be spys or in desperation had attempted to betray their fellows. These were exicuted. In this game, the invasion force is reduced to Castro and Che. "Che" is a Cuban word that means "Hey You". Much like the real life situation, Che is the main character doing the dirty work while Castro is the secondary character. In Japan, this game is called "Guevara War".

Flying Hero  Epic Sony Records (Aicom)19893 firemen rescue people and put out fires with standard firefighting equipment in the standard way; flying through the air by bouncing of a trampoline. The game mechanics are a bit odd but are basically a type of breakout/arkanoid style. Each stage consist of a burning building full of trapped civilians. You bounce your fireman up to grab people from their windows or extinguish flames. Catch jumpers to save their lives. The stage is complete when either all the flames are extinguished or all the people are evacuated. Various powerups appear to help. A remote bring a helicopter with various uses. A clock will freeze time. There are 1ups. A trumpet makes it rain to extinguish all flames immediately. A fire extinguisher can be used to extinguish a flaming trampoline.. A power-up lets you put out flames faster.. A trampoline makes you trampoline wider..A shirt grants temporary invincibility. A wand takes you inside the building; which is effectively a bonus stage. There are negative poweeups as well.

The box art and title screen actually give the titles as "フライング 飛ing ヒーロー" which is basicly Flying Flying Hero

The North American version, Blazebusters, was never released but the catalog number can be presumed to be NES-FZ-USA

As a member of the elite tactical squad Operation Wolf, you must invade their hideout, destroy their operations, and get the hostages out alive! Maneuver through a series of missions and fight off soldiers, patrol boats, helicopters, and more. The further you progress, the more enemies you'll have to defeat and the harder they'll try to stop you in your tracks (going so far as tossing knives and grenades at you or wearing armor). Each area along your path ends with a boss battle where you'll have to find and exploit each boss's particular weakness. To top it all off, your weapon options are also limited, so you'll need to conserve ammunition and grenades. Operation Wolf is said to be the most valiant and capable unit in the military-can you save the hostages and win the day? labelimagesubject
